Artnet is opening the spring auction series by a curated selection of exceptional photographic works by the most influential and in-demand artists of our time.
From iconic, recognizable images, to innovative experimental shots, Photographs: The Premier Sale offers works by noteworthy Post-War and Contemporary photographers including Gilbert & George, Cindy Sherman, Sally Mann, Richard Prince, Annie Leibovitz, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nick Brandt, Martin Schoeller and William Eggleston.
Martin Schoeller’s Angelina with Blood is his most iconic, desirable image. From his Close-ups series, Schoeller takes hundreds of photographs in rapid succession. The portrait is tightly-framed and hyper-detailed offering a stripped-down look at Jolie.
Martin Schoeller (American/German, b. 1968) is recognized as one of the foremost portrait photographers of the 21st century. His aesthetic is inspired in part by the photographic projects of Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose work is similarly bare and tightly cropped. While many of Schoeller’s works portray notable figures such as celebrities, singers, and athletes, he also photographs unknown individuals with an equally frank intensity. By doing so, he presents people from all walks of life on the same level, treating each face as worthy of consideration. His works are included in several permanent collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C., among others.
