Applications are now open for Atelier Smedsby, a one-year photography workshop founded by JH Engström and Margot Wallard.
Established in 2012, the program was created in response to the limitations of short-term workshops, offering photographers the opportunity to develop their work through sustained mentorship and guidance over the course of a year.
Combining monthly online meetings with three in-person workshops in Montreuil (just outside Paris) Atelier Smedsby brings together participants from around the world while allowing them to remain based in their home countries. The program encourages experimentation across all photographic practices and focuses on helping each participant identify and strengthen their individual visual language, and develop their photography projects into concrete forms.
Throughout the year, participants receive individual mentorship, group critiques, and guidance on editing, sequencing, and selection, as well as development of photobooks, exhibitions, and presenting work to galleries and publishers. Many alumni have gone on to publish photobooks and present exhibitions developed during their time at Atelier Smedsby.
Applications close September 7, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit atelier-smedsby.com.
