Doisneau/Pennac, Family Life & Summer Holidays

Preview

Hoëbeke publishes two books by Robert Doisneau and Daniel Pennac that meet and reflect together their sensitive personalities.

Family Life

How beautiful family life is through Robert Doisneau’s camera lens! In the 1950s and 60s, he took exceptional, superbly textured photographs that testified to the happy and peaceful life of familial togetherness. He knew how to capture, with a tender glance, the ordinary, fleeting moments in a life of contented simplicity which is notoriously difficult to photograph: blissful feelings and desires, the joy of being a family, complicity among siblings, modesty. First, it’s marriage, then children, and several generations seated around a lively dinner, with no television.

Daniel Pennac shares these experiences and lends them his own inimitable voice, with funny dialogs evocative of the famous characters from his novels. He writes amusing and touching stories, perhaps drawn from real life, filled with good-natured nostalgia, and perfectly suited to Robert Doisneau’s old-fashioned images. Here is a photo album that could have well been his own.

Summer Holidays

From the late 1930s until 1960, Robert Doisneau photographed the French on vacation or about to depart: fishing nets, suitcases balanced on one’s head, skis resting on bunk beds. Paid vacation offered people the opportunity to escape, hop on a bicycle, climb into a canoe, explore the countryside, or finally discover the seaside! Everyone will recognize themselves in the memories contained in this album. Daniel Pennac’s stories, told with the usual energy, complement the photographs. These are stories about his friends, and, in the first place, about Robert Doisneau and his family: “Vacation stories are, just like Doisneau’s photographs, snapshots of the soul.”

Doisneau/Pennac: a tender and joyful partnership, with a dose of wisdom. Two men, both sensitive and funny, meet on the pages of this book to tell the story, each in his own way, of a certain era and of a specific social milieu: the suburb dwellers and their children.
