The fifth ICRC Humanitarian Visa d’or award will see a change in  subject. After covering medical missions in regions of armed conflict, focusing on issues of access and respect for these missions, this year’s award goes to a photojournalist reporting on women in war. The award, which was founded in 2011 and has a prize money of 8000 euros funded by the ICRC, goes this year to Diana Zeyneb Alhindawi for her reportage on the Minova Rape Trials. She covered the military tribunal set up to try the cases of the 39 members of the Congolese armed forces charged with rape and other forms of sexual violence committed in November 2012; the hearings included testimony from some of the victims. The award was presented during the evening show on Thursday, September 3, 2015.

The jury composed by Daphné Anglès, (New York Times), Armelle Canitrot, (La Croix), Magdalena Herrera (Géo), Jerôme Huffer (Paris Match), Cyril Drouhet (Le Figaro magazine), Georgios Comninos and David-Pierre Marquet (CICR) is particularly interested in stories featuring women as victims of sexual violence, as fighters or taking over as head of the family when the men have left, either fighting, killed in combat or held captive.

The ICRC was founded 150 years ago for the purpose of providing assistance and protection for people in times of armed conflict and other situations of violence. The ICRC operates in some sixty countries.

Previous winners: Catalina Martin-Chico (2011), Mani (2012), Sebastiano Tomada (2013), William Daniels (2014).
