The Galerie VOZ will exhibit the series Beautiful Mind by the photographer Mirjam Appelhof.
After working in many other art forms like dance, writing, drawing and painting, Appelhof finally found a way to express her inner emotion through photography. For a long time she took photos and recorded images, but she was dissatisfied with them. They looked too much like others that had come before. So she decided to use the camera as a tool to create an interior world.
Appelhof creates worlds from small objects and gives them meaning. Her work is composed of different images, which she assembles with Photoshop. Everything you see, she created. Sometimes she “paints” on the images, while at other times she uses various everyday materials. Most of the characters seen in her work are self-portraits made using a timer.
She also plays with movement, disrupting the viewer’s mind, who wonders whether the image is painted or photographed. Appelhof’s work calls into questions the mind’s certainties and offers a new way of seeing the world.
