Mulhouse is among cities of more than 100 000 inhabitants which counts most foreigners.
Without the labor immigration, Mulhouse would not have been able to become an industrial power.
When the unemployment appeared in the industry, some people wanted to associate it with the problems of immigration which is often in the heart of the conversations. We forget the progress of the history and the reasons which brought the foreigners to come down in Alsace.
The workers’ housing development. The mulhousian model.
It is to Jean Dollfus, founder of the company DMC that we owe the realization of the project. From 1853 till 1897, it is 1 243 housing which were built in the city.
My questioning concerns essentially the future of a workers’ housing development, more than 150 years after the construction of the first house. Who lives there ? What transformation ?
The workers’city development of Mulhouse concentrates all the wealth and the problem today.
Families of different origins and ethnic groups mix with sometimes some clashes. From the Alsacian, born in the city, to the last newcomers who talk hardly French, each tries to live.
But all have a story, interesting, original and all work or worked a lot to become owner of their house to which they attach a major importance.
