MY FAMILY is a BUTCHER’S SHOP
For the past five years, with the series MY FAMILY is a BUTCHER’S SHOP, I have been traveling across France in search of butcher shop façades — still operating, closed, abandoned, or converted into homes.
A singular phenomenon in Europe: these storefronts are often preserved, even when the business disappears. Why keep them? Out of pride in the trade? Attachment to a family history? A refusal to erase the traces of a life of work?
Shaped by colors, materials, and typography, these façades tell far more than the story of a shop. They carry the memory of families, gestures, and territories. They embody a form of popular aesthetics, an everyday visual culture, a kind of emotional heritage.
This documentary and artistic project is rooted in my own history: a lineage of butchers, generation after generation. Through images, I remove these façades from their environment to better question what they reveal about our cities, our eating habits, and the place these shops still — or no longer — occupy within the social fabric.
