Tokyo Streets by Chotoku Tanaka and Takehiko Nakafuji

Preview

Galerie in)(between in Paris prominently features contemporary Japanese photography and is spotlighting two photographers who are heirs of the cultural and visual revolution of the 1960s: Chotoku Tanaka and Takehiko Nakafuji. It is dedicating two personal exhibitions to them and is offering a cross-examination of their views of Tokyo.

These two masters of contrasting black and white film photography share deep affinities with photographers from PROVOKE and CAMP, particularly a very spontaneous and intuitive practice of shooting, most often in big cities. Coarse grain, high-contrast, offset camera angles, their shots are affiliated with the are-bure-boke style, literally “rough, blurred, out of focus”, established by Daido Moriyama. More than the result of a thoughtful and matured design, their photographs express an intuitive reaction, sparked by immersive, random strolls.

Both Tokyo natives, Chotoku Tanaka and Takehiko Nakafuji maintain a unique relationship with their hometown with which they experiment in their photographic work.
