Les Nuits Photographiques : Etienne Charbonnier, Demain dès l’Aube

Preview

We continue and present the projects selected by Les Nuits Photographiques 2015 awards, which took place on September 19th. Today is about “Demain dès l’Aube“, directed by Etienne Charbonnier, french photographer.

Some key events in life cannot be recalled to  consciousness. The need for remembrance gradually feeds the fantasy until we are no longer able to untangle dream from reality. Then comes the time where the void is accepted.

I realized “tomorrow at dawn” in the family home, ready to be left definitively. I had explored and photographed it in every corner before, aiming to leave a trace of the lives and deaths in this place. Then I had the need to realize a raw and instinctive work. So I created the music and photos simultaneously, the two inspired by each other, in a single night, experienced as a personal and artistic performance.

Here is what I do not remember.

Etienne Charbonnier, upright bassist born in 1977, graduated from the CNSM in Lyon. For almost twenty years he travels the world and plays in renowned festivals and venues.
His love of photography began very young, in the darkroom. A trip to Palestine, in 2009, reveals to him a need for photography. He continues today by covering the stage or the backstage of tours and by developing his personal projects in the world of musicians or on the quest of remembrance.
In 2015, his meeting with Ackerman compels him to find a new photographic language, where music becomes both tool and component of his creations.
