FIFTY ONE TOO presents There Is No Pink, a collective exhibition.
Every work in this exhibition contains pink. None of them contains pink.
Pink has no wavelength. It exists nowhere in the visible spectrum. Unlike red, green or violet, there is no single frequency of light that the eye perceives as pink. It is a colour the brain invents.
When red and blue-violet light reach the eye together, with little or no green, the visual system resolves this impossible combination by producing a colour that is not physically present. Pink belongs to a family of non-spectral colours: colours that exist only in perception.
This exhibition is therefore organised around an absence. The works appear to share a colour, yet what they truly share is a perceptual event. Pink is not a material fact but a collaboration between light, object and viewer.
That paradox unfolds differently from work to work. In photography, pink emerges through film stocks, digital sensors, colour profiles and printing processes. In painting, it is constructed through pigments that only become “pink” in relation to neighbouring colours and to the eye that receives them. In collage, fragments from different worlds combine to produce an image whose unity exists only in perception.
The artists assembled here work with different materials, different histories and different intentions. Yet they all arrive, knowingly or not, at the same phenomenon. Pink becomes less a colour than a proposition: evidence that every image is completed by its viewer.
Perhaps there is no pink. There are only images that persuade us there is.
