Jiwei Han: –Trolley in Cwmbran

Preview

The town of Cwmbran is located North of Newport, South of the Welsh lands. Here people still maintain the habit of using the common shopping trolley, as if living in a world where the hasty evolution of technology had long ceased. After shopping, the loaded trolleys are pushed to the respective homes, just to be left abandoned in yards, roadsides, lawns, ponds and places as such… Never to be returned…

I was born in 1980 in Beijing, China. My undergraduate degree is about ‘Computer Science and Technology’ and graduated in 2004 from the Beihang University, China. After that, I worked as a Software Engineer for 5 years and as a Software Project Manager for 2 years in a famous IT company.

My 1st experience of photography was in 2004, the year I met my girlfriend. In order to record our first dating, I borrowed a compact digital camera from a friend and took the first picture in my life. Suddenly, I found I fell in love with photography and began to study, because my first picture for me looked very lovely and always remind me of our happy moments on our first date.

Because of my love of photography, in 2011 I decided to change my life and followed my dream of photography. In January I sent some street pictures from Beijing of the past seven years as my portfolio to the University of Wales, Newport, tried to apply to the MA Documentary Photography course. Fortunately, I received an invitation to join in March. Hence, in August, I gave up my Project Manager’s job and came alone to study in Newport. So, my project — ‘Launderette’, is the first project in my life and I try my best to practice and make it as well as possible.
