In early 2014, a concerned citizen contacted The Luck Lucy Foundation (animal rescue) about the plight of a severely neglected dog in the Western Cape, South Africa. After a series of lengthy negotiations with the owner, Blacky was finally surrendered into the care of the Luck Lucy Foundation. And so began Blacky‘s year-long journey to recovery.

When arriving at the foundation, Blacky was suffering from mange and starvation. However, he responded well to treatment, food and love-even regaining enough strength to overcome an aggressive and life-threatening strain of biliary in March.

Month by month this project plots a full year of Blacky‘s recovery. It illustrates how a neglected animal need not be euthanised but instead, with the right intervention and care, can be nursed back to health and given a second chance.
