Kiss Of Death

Three years ago, life hit us hard. My daughter was just six months old when my husband, only 35 at the time, was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. ‘Focus on quality rather than quantity,’ they told us — in other words, ‘You have terminal cancer; you’re going to die.’ All the struggles we faced before suddenly seemed insignificant. Everything revolved around this (not yet) death sentence. I captured the cancer diagnosis and its impact on myself and our young family in the photo series Kiss of Death.

I was approached by Steven Hond of Komma Publishers to create a photo book together about this work — an honor, and a dream come true.

The photo book Kiss of Death is a visual narrative of my life, from idyll to nightmare. It presents my photographs taken before and after the cancer diagnosis, in chronological order. My camera captured everything — at home and while traveling — showing how family life changed, while at the same time, the most ordinary things continued as if nothing had happened. Portraits and self-portraits are interspersed with landscapes, all portrayed in a dreamy, serene style.
