Spirit in the Dark
“Spirit in the Dark” is an ongoing monochromatic series by equine artist Anna Archinger, based on long-exposure photography. Each piece in the series centers on Andaluz, a white horse originally from Spain and now in training at a private riding school in Dronningmølle, Denmark. Struck by Andaluz’s sensitive yet unpredictable personality, powerful, spirited, and slightly wild, Archinger documents not just the horse’s physical form but the emotional resonance of his presence
With each image, Archinger captures the fleeting gestures of horses in motion as if they were dancing bodies breaking through the stillness of space and memory. “Watching them work together is like observing a dance,” says the artist, referring to Andaluz and his trainer. That dynamic becomes the emotional core of the photograph: a study of trust, discipline, and kinetic grace.
Shot mostly in vertical format against a deep black backdrop, the series employs a low-key lighting style and slow shutter speed to render motion as ethereal blur. Andaluz appears ghost-like, a luminous being caught between visibility and disappearance, framed like a spirit in transit.
Surreal in aesthetic yet grounded in lived observation, “Spirit in the Dark” reflects Archinger’s enduring fascination with the expressive potential of horses and the unspoken dialogue they carry with those who guide them.
