78th Street Studios – Gallery+ : Barney Fredrick Taxel : Photographs from Opportunity Corridor

Preview

Constructed between 2013 and 2022, Cleveland, Ohio’s Opportunity Corridor is the ’transformative’ 3.2 mile boulevard connecting industrialized East 55th Street /I-490 and the Tremont neighborhood with North Slavic Village, the Fairfax neighborhood, Little Italy and the cultural and medical institutions of University Circle. Land acquisitions and demolition for the project began in 2013 and construction was completed in 2022.

In 2014, Taxel began photographing homes, businesses, churches and landmarks in the planned Corridor’s path (most destined to be razed) and road construction sites. His motivation was that this development project, based on the urban planning premise- ‘build it and they will come’- was calling for a record of the changes to the community brought about by this new roadway.

Barney Fredrick Taxel creates richly realistic landscape and detail-oriented photographs of places and people. He established his photography studio and darkroom near the intersection of East 55th Street and Carnegie Avenue fifty years ago and became a neighborhood advocate and activist at the studio’s inception.
