Zineland by Antoine Soubrier: The Eyes

Preview

The Eyes, launched by Aman Iman Publishing on paper and electronically (iOS etc), the first paper edition of which has been announced for autumn 2013, presents itself as “the first European magazine dedicated to photography “. Ouverts sur l’Europe, The Eyes is a sort of European Aperture, in a nice perfect-bound A4 format of around two hundred pages.

Published as a bilingual French and English magazine, it will come out half-yearly or quarterly and sets out to explore the continent of Europe through photography: it includes full-page portfolios, analysis, interviews, commentaries, historic reportage and book and exhibition reviews … Somewhat as a side note to the critical vocation of the review, the Photopolis section, which documents the photographic resources of a city (schools, bookshops, galleries..), is the part that appealed to us most on first reading: we like the way it evokes the idea of a local scene, the people and places that breath life into the practice of photography in a real, physical context.

All the richer for appearing in English and French, The Eyes will need to find the right balance between text and images to avoid tiring its readers. Its tone is promising, open and comprehensible and if the different sections are simple and direct enough (I speak as a simple reader), it should conquer and give life to its worthy theme.
