Special Books : Tones of Dirt and Bone by Mike Brodie

Preview

Mike Brodie spent years crisscrossing the U.S. amassing a collection, now appreciated as one of the most impressive archives of American travel photography.” His first monograph, A Period of Juvenile Prosperity, published by Twin Palms in 2012, was a phenomenal success; and Twin Palms has just published his second book, Tones of Dirt and Bone.

I asked Jack Woody, editor and publisher of Twelvetrees Press and Twin Palms Publishers, about the logistics of producing this new book with Brodie.

“Mike came to the house and spent a weekend going through what seemed like a thousand Polaroid’s. Paul Shiek has now organized them carefully in boxes. Before Paul got to them I imagine Mike kept them bundled with rubber bands in one of those brown hard-shell suitcases you find in thrift shops.

Mike told stories about the pictures when prompted. I recognized a tower in one of them which is next to the railroad tracks near my house in New Orleans; said he decided to climb it one day and found out high places were not one of his favorite things, ‘scared the shit out of me’ or something like that.

The pictures are taken on the road/train; they precede the work in his first book, subjects from New York City to San Francisco. Mike is living in Oakland now with Celeste and I think he can’t help but take pictures every now and then, though he professes complete disinterest in the ‘ business of photography’. For the most part his career in photography proceeds without him. j”
