Meanders of an Island, Port-Cros

In November 2023, Rachele Cassetta settled on the island of Port-Cros for a residency supported by the DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs), the Friends of Port-Cros association, and the Port-Cros National Park.

For two weeks, she explored the paths of this marvelous piece of land, in her own words, paying particular attention to its rocks, shapes, and the details of its landscapes. Midway through her stay, breaking with her almost complete solitude, she met Janine Chapelier’s son who, under the trees of the Vallon de la Solitude (Valley of Solitude), recounted the astonishing history of the island’s last hundred years and the involvement of his mother, a schoolteacher and poet in the 1940s. It was then that she was able to read his poems, which immediately resonated with her photographs. Standing side by side, they very quickly evoked in her a feeling of deep familiarity.
