Photo Days invites Yan Carpenter to the Sorbonne’s Galerie Soufflot with the exhibition Giro nos Acessos. A self‑taught photographer born in Rio de Janeiro, Yan Carpenter develops work rooted in his everyday life at the heart of the favelas in the city’s north zone. There he captures fragments of life: gestures, faces, suspended instants, subtle echoes of the vitality of a territory so often misrepresented.
With this series, shown at the Sorbonne Artgallery of the Université Paris 1 Panthéon‑Sorbonne, Photo Days pursues its commitment to bring works into dialogue with atypical places. In this space of passage and learning, Yan Carpenter’s images meet a young and curious audience in training a living of looking that gives full meaning to the approach.
The exhibition is part of the ongoing partnership with Sorbonne Artgallery and precedes the artist’s residency in France, supported by SAM Art Projects.
About SAM ART PROJECTS
Since its founding in 2009, SAM Art Projects has incorporated three strands of support for creation in its philanthropic program: the SAM Prize (endowed with €20,000 and awarded each year to an artist on the French scene presenting a project destined for a foreign country); SAM residencies (which have made it possible to welcome and exhibit in France more than 20 artists from 19 countries); and carte blanche commissions. By reviving this residency program—suspended in 2020 due to the health context Sandra Hegedüs, Founder of SAM Art Projects, strengthens her committed support for the production and distribution of contemporary art by encouraging artistic exchange between North and South and between East and West.
About the Sorbonne Artgallery
A contemporary art gallery located in the heart of Université Paris 1 Panthéon‑Sorbonne since 2015, Sorbonne Artgallery is run by the Art&Flux research team under the direction of Yann Toma. Installed in the Galerie Soufflot, it offers a rich and varied program aimed at creating a circuit of artistic experiences and shared knowledge among students, professors, professionals, and visitors. With more than 70 exhibitions, it works to advance scholarly approaches to art and research‑creation, and welcomes artist‑researchers from around the world—inviting the public to look at the world differently.
