Paris : Dorothy Shoes, ColèresS Planquées..

Preview

From January 14 to March 31, 2016, the French Brain and Spinal Cord Institute at the Hôpital Pitié Salpêtrière is hosting the exhibition ColèresS Planquées by the young artist Dorothy Shoes. We featured some of these images last May as part of the Vendôme festival Promenades Photographiques; on the occasion of the current exhibition, we present a selection of new images that have been added to the earlier portfolio.

ColèresS Planquées, the word is an anagram for the French term for multiple sclerosis (MS). Having the disease myself,I asked women I know to interpret my personal representations of MS and its degenerative factors.
Considered incurable, this protean disease is most of the time misunderstood, MS affects over 300,000 people in Europe.

“Night and day your body crackles like a sparkler. You’re in luck, it’s your birthday. The diagnosis has been confirmed, recorded, validated: you are ill.
You blow out the candle, a wish, who knows.
Longer. Longer. Just a little longer. But no. You are ill.
The news is like a squall that hits you straight in the face just when you’re out without your windbreaker. An uppercut, its speed, its force. Then silence.
Silence like a slimy bog that has you mired in place, face down in a pool of snot until you drown. But finally you don’t drown. Which may be worse. You swallow the slime. You pull yourself together, fix your hair, and keep going.”
