Jerry Schatzberg is a prodigious filmmaker, and he was also an extraordinary photographer.
See this virtual exhibition that Antonia Stoyanovich of the Morrison Hotel Gallery sent us. She writes :
New York has a way of making you feel like you’re in a movie. Maybe that’s why Jerry Schatzberg captured it so perfectly. Long before directing The Panic in Needle Park or Scarecrow, Jerry was behind the camera photographing the real characters of the city, musicians, models, poets, and the wonderfully unpredictable streets in between.
Jerry’s photographs feel like New York itself. They are stylish, a little gritty, and full of stories you can almost hear. I have a personal soft spot for the city, and seeing Jerry’s work always makes me remember why, it’s that mix of chaos and charm that never really leaves you.
