Do you speak the Narbout?
Artist Georgi Narbut created the graphic identity of Ukraine; he was one of the founders of the Kyiv National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture at the start of the 20th century. Misha Zavalniy is a photographer, graphic designer, student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
On the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the birth of Narbout, Editions Rodovid and the Anne de Kyiv Center with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation have decided to present a monograph in French on the artist, which we owe to Myroslava Mudrak. The first presentation of the book is in Paris, where Narbout has never been. But what would happen if his work appeared in the French capital today? Would Paris speak the visual language of Narbout? This experiment captivated Misha Zavalniy. “What I do in my studio (lithography, engraving) is a way of expressing my inner state. Whereas street photography is a reaction to the outside world. I try to understand what interests me, what fascinates me, ”he explains. (…)
