In February 2017, the Les Femmes s’en Mêlent (LFSM) festival and Galerie Les Filles du calvaire (LFDC) have decided to celebrate their twenty year anniversary together. These two Parisian institutions, each in their own way, defend and develop a unique, but rather similar idea about female artistic expression. Therefore, the gallery is hosting an exhibition on the history of the festival and, more substantially, on female iconography in the music world.

One can remember the female rock heroines of the 70s and beginning of the 80s such as Patti Smith, Kate Bush, and those more underground like The Slits, Siouxsie, Poly Styrene from X-Ray Spex, or Nina Hagen. They crystallize a truly singular, radical time, which inspired a multitude of current female figures, the majority presented at the LFSM festival.

Through sound and visual documents, the two institutions revisit the festival’s twenty years alongside contemporary works and vintage archives to bare witness to its history and everything that helped it along the way. The exhibition is composed of concert photography, portraits of artists (Evelyne Coutas, Sarah Bastin, Florie Berger, Renaud Monfourny, Cécile Mathieu, Vincent Ferrané Philippe Levy…), paintings and drawings (Radenko Milak, Ditte Ejlerskov, LUZ), works marked with a “rock” attitude (SMITH, Karen Knorr & Olivier Richon, Charlotte Beaudry), experts of texts (Virginie Despentes, Maylis de Kerangal), posters (Hélène Builly, Mylène Lestradic…), articles, magazine covers, and rare vinyls.

Between fantasy and reality, the exhibition is an occasion to examine a pop, female world through the eyes of Les Femmes s’en Mêlent where rock icons rub shoulders with the anonymous to draw together a subjective and provocative visual history of the female music scene. It is accompanied by movie projection nights. The musical Les Femmes s’en Mêlent festival is taking place in Paris from March 27-31 and in the rest of France March 23 through April 1.
