Leigh Ledare presents “Double Bind, 2012” in La vie domestique at Parc Saint-Léger

Preview

The Centre d’Art Contemporain is located in rural Parc Saint-Léger, France. Its director for the past seven years, Sandra Patron, is curating one final show before taking over the direction of the Musée Régional d’Art Contemporain in Sérignac.

The installation, based on Leigh Ledare’s work Double Bind, reflects the ties between intimacy and social conventions. Arriving through the corridor to find 480 posters lining the walls, the visitor is thrown into the photographer’s complex world. (Minors are prohibited due to the exhibition’s explicit sexual content.) The posters are like collages from the glossy pages of a magazine, with the woman offering her body to the desirous male gaze.

In the midst of the wildly colorful walls, we find a double series of photographs showing the artist’s ex-wife, Meghan Ledare-Fedderly. The viewer dives even deeper into the private life of Leigh Ledare, since these photographs, as is often the case in his work, were taken according to a strictly determined protocol: on two separate occasions, this woman was photographed by her ex-husband (Ledare) and her current husband (Adam Fedderly, also a photographer), in the same house in the forest. The photographs, showing a certain raw physical intimacy, coming from two men united by the same woman, seem strangely familiar, which is all the more disturbing. Only the black border (for Ledare) and white border (for Fedderly) set them apart. Meghan appears loving, shy, and unabashedly offered up.
