We learned of the passing of Melvin Sokolsky, Peter Fetterman wrote the following words in remembrance of this great photographer. Below, you will also find the links from our archives to the many features we published about Sokolsky through the years.
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we share the news of Melvin’s passing this week.
I enjoyed a long and wonderful collaboration with him. He was truly a one of a kind and possessed a wonderful enthusiasm and love of life. Always positive and with a child’s constant amazement at the world, he had a genuine love of people. It shows in his work.
A self-made man, he certainly changed the profession and genre he specialized in with a great technical prowess and a unique vision long before the “d” word was ever invented and photoshop existed.
I think he was a deep romantic at heart. He gave us such life affirming images of grace and beauty that allowed us all to escape and dream. For this we should all be grateful. He enjoyed a long and wonderful marriage to his wife Button, and was a great Dad to his son Bing. My heart goes out to his family. We were all so fortunate to have known him. RIP
Peace and love,
