Anja Maria and Burkhard Arnold of in focus Galerie continue their series “Magic of Photography” with photographs from the gallery’s holdings. Here is Alvin Booth.

Alvin Booth is a New York based artist, originally from Hull, England and was shown in many exhibitions and published in many magazines in America and in Europe.

His work revels both in the intrinsic beauty of the human form, and in the mutations of that beauty. Using the body’s malleability and gravity as a palette, Booth creates a landscape that is at times attractively familiar and at times seductively surreal.

Anyone who meets Alvin and his wife Niki in their classic car gets the impression that both come from a long time ago, let’s say the 30s, 40s. This nice, special couple is one of the many people who gave us rich hospitality. So we stayed not only in their delightful apartment in New York, on the wonderful street where Audrey Hepurn lived until her death, but also in the south of France, in a village in the mountains. There they both gradually buy ruins and work with their own hands to transform into truly dreamlike domiciles, which they also rent out to holiday guests, especially those who come from America. Alvin has even been asked to become mayor of this small town. He still refuses to take on this additional responsibility. His artistic work should not be neglected.

The work shown featured (50 x 36 cm, Ed. 7, Print Graphen in illuminated frame) comes from the series “Nocturnes”, made since 2015. At first glance these sculptural photographs appear to be glossy mirror-like black boxes on the wall. As night falls or as the ambient light in their environment changes, a soft luminescence comes to life. Lyrical, almost balletic figures emerge whose movements are echoed in the gesture of the carbon sheath that obscures them by day.

Initially, viewers can’t be sure if what they’re seeing is the print itself or a ghost-like latent image.

Inquiries about Alvin Booth´s work or an appointment to visit the gallery can be made by phone or email to [email protected].
