Herb Ascherman, San Francisco Folsom Street Fair
Each September for the past several years I have photographed at San Francisco’s Folsom Street Fair.
Hyped as the World’s Largest Leather Event, the fair attracts between 250,000 and 400,000 attendees for a SINGLE DAY’s event. Attendees come from countries throughout the world to experience this incredible gathering.
Although the Fair started in 1984 as a primarily gay event, it has since burgeoned into a major social gathering which serves both gay, kink and straight communities. Far from its early complexion as entirely gay, it now attracts about 65% gay, 15% Kink, 10% straight, and 7% photographers and 3% Asian tourists with cameras.
Folsom has grown as a non-profit charity, benefitting local and national non-profits. Gate admissions and vendor fees are all donated to charities country-wide.
