Caterpillars Story

First of all these caterpillars are lepidopteran larvae. I have taken this series at my garden at New Barrackpur, Kolkata, India during the year 2017 and 2018.

Here little caterpillars are eating green bananas and hyacinth leaves. It looks like it is their communal feast. Actually after the rainy season butterflies lay their eggs on these leaves. After a few days the caterpillars came out from the eggs and they started to eat the leaves. During this period these leaves are only food to eat for them. All caterpillars are a little bit poisonous mainly when they have stings. For many people their appearance is much more dangerous than their stings. But as a photographer it’s a beautiful and very interesting moment for me.

Like everyday I went to shoot some insects in my garden. Suddenly I saw some unusual things happening on my head. I zoomed out my lens and I was wondering to see these unique moments. I was using my Canon Eos 1200 D with Canon 55-250mm lens. These unusual things were happening near about 1.5 meters from my lens. There was one banana leaf where more than thousands and thousands of caterpillars were there and in the hyacinth tree there were also hundreds and hundred caterpillars on most of the leaves.

I was really wondering and it was very interesting because of the pattern and structures they had created by their stings. Actually there was no particular portion , they were eating randomly. When I was taking these shots from below the sunlight was behind the leaves and I was trying to capture those white sparkling stings. That’s why I had to wait for a long time to take these shots. I had to take about 2 to 3 hours to take these shots. And I was personally injured by these caterpillars when I was taking these shots. Some of the caterpillars were dropping from the leaves on me. But after all the things I am so happy to shoot these shots of beautiful nature.
