The skin is our greatest sense organ, it keeps us one. We make different stimuli and if they are intense enough, they create a feeling, which then runs through every single layer and proverbially "gets under the skin“. In most cases these sensations leave traces and emerging from that, they create experiences, which finally turn into memories.
