Scotland, East & West Side Stories #1
“Some points on the west coast of Scotland are further east than some points on the east coast.” It is with this seemingly absurd sentence that Michel Duchein introduces his History of Scotland (Taillandier Publishers ©2013). This opening line wonderfully imagines the unexpected aspects of Scottish history and territory.
I first came to know the country as a student in the 1990s, and I return today as a photographer. Brexit has now been adopted. The Scots didn’t want it; no matter, they continue to defend their culture and to turn towards others, inexorably.
The first chapter of this photographic work focuses on the west coast of the country: The Highlands, the Trossachs, the town of Oban, and the Isle of Mull. I observe a remarkable sense of humility there; people live without expecting any recognition from elsewhere.
