The Spirit of a Dress: Jacqueline Kennedy

Preview

The exhibition, a colourful journey through time curated in cooperation with Marimekko, transports the visitor back into the year of 1960 – a year in which Chubby Checkers “The Twist” takes over the world and influences developments in fashion; a year in which playful floral elements contrast with geometric shift dresses – and the year in which John F. Kennedy is elected as the 35th President of the United States. During this historic election John F. Kennedy’s wife Jackie rises to become its secret star and a style icon combining a special sense for puristic elegance with her youthful charm. Next to prestigious French fashion labels, Jackie also trusted Marimekko during that election.

The exhibition shows the original edition of the »Sports Illustrated« with Jackie in a Marimekko dress on its cover –making Marimekko a focus of desire overnight– and many rare photographs from that time. The special exhibition also presents a valuable Marimekko original from 1960 which was worn by Jackie during the election campaign. Additionally, Marimekko dresses from that period as well as swatches complement the visually impressive exhibition and testify to the timelessness of Marimekkos prominent fashion designs.
