Shen Wei –Chinese sentiment

Preview

Chinese Sentiment is the most recent series by New York based artist Shen Wei. The images were made in over twenty different locations in China between 2008 and 2010. Wei’s first monograph also titled Chinese Sentiment (Charles Lane Press, New York) has recently been released coinciding with an exhibition at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York.

In contrast to typical imagery of contemporary life in China, Wei explores the intimate life of his subject through portraiture, landscape and still life. By intertwining the three genres Wei produces a unique and sensitive view of his homeland. We see very few buildings or cars. Instead Wei focuses on the China of his childhood, lush scenery and portraits of his friends and family in their homes. By providing glimpses of his China we are allowed into the artist’s life, past and present.

Born and raised in Shanghai, Shen Wei currently lives and works in New York City. He received an MFA in photography, video, and related media from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a BFA in photography from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited and published nationally and internationally, and is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, The Harn Museum of Art, The Museum of Chinese in America, The Griffin Museum of Photography, and The Kinsey Institute. He is a recipient of fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, UAI/New York City, LMCC and Light Work.
