Arles – Sarah Carp : Sans Visage

Preview

Sarah Carp, a graduate of the Vevey School of Photography, has presented her work in Switzerland and abroad. Winner of the 2019 Focale Prize from the City of Nyon, she also won the 2021 Vaudois Photographic Survey. That same year, her project, created during the lockdown, earned her the grand prize at the Swiss Press Photo Award.

Confined to her apartment, Sarah Carp photographed her children during the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The girls’ father took exception to these images and prevented their publication, citing child protection concerns. The artist then reenacted the scenes with other children, creating a theater of intimacy. She weaved the child actors’ heads with colored dots reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein. The artifice acts as a mask.

This project explores the forbidden, image rights, the hidden, and subterfuge to circumvent censorship.
