What We Learned This Week: A Record 124 Journalists Were Killed in 2024
A record 124 journalists and media workers were killed in 2024, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists–the most in any year since the organization began keeping records in 1992. The Israeli military accounted for 85 of the 124 deaths, and, noted the Press Gazette, the CPJ believes that in ten cases there is evidence journalists were deliberately targeted by Israeli fighters. The previous deadliest year for journalists was 2007, when 113 deaths were recorded by the CPJ. Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders announced that it has recorded nearly 150 journalists who have fallen victim of Russian abuses since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2022. (…)
