Duane Michals inaugurates a new exhibition season at SpazioReale.
Experimental, poetic, introspective: Duane Michals has established himself as one of the most innovative and influential artists in contemporary photography thanks to a distinctive approach that goes beyond the simple act of immortalizing reality. His work transcends the confines of traditional photography, giving form even to what escapes the eye. From April 30th to June 21st, the exhibition “Duane Michals. Photographer of the Invisible” in Monte Carasso will offer the public the opportunity to discover a master of the contemporary art scene.
In a completely renovated SpazioReale, ready to host new photography exhibitions, the 2026 exhibition season will kick off with an internationally renowned American artist: Duane Michals. Known as a pioneer of an unprecedented photographic style, his photographs have the ability to capture the invisible, exploring profound aspects of the human experience such as identity, time, and relationships.
The exhibition Duane Michals: Photographer of the Invisible comprises a wide range of works, from the artist’s earliest images to some of his most recent works. These include well-known portraits of artists such as Joseph Cornell, René Magritte, and Marcel Duchamp—key figures who have left a profound mark on Michals’s career—alongside self-portraits by the photographer himself. The exhibition thus allows us not only to explore the evolution of the artist’s language, but also to understand the impact of his narrative approach on contemporary photography. His ability to give form to the intangible, the emotional, and the surreal establishes him as a true visual storyteller, whose work continues to challenge the boundaries of traditional photography. The result of his work is a visual universe in which the ordinary transforms into the extraordinary, inviting the viewer to question, doubt, and look beyond the obvious.
Among the distinctive features of Duane Michals’s style is his ability to enrich his work with handwritten notes: intimate and personal marks that amplify the meaning of the images. He is also a pioneer in telling stories through sequences of photographs, transforming each shot into part of a larger narrative that transcends mere static representation.
Finally, through experiments with light and exposure, he creates overlays in which multiple images merge, giving rise to presences and atmospheres that otherwise escape the eye. All this defines a unique, instantly recognizable style, which makes Duane Michals an original and extraordinary voice in contemporary photography.
The exhibition, curated by Enrica Viganò of ADMIRA Milano, will be open from April 30 to June 21, 2026 at SpazioReale, at the Ancient Augustinian Convent of Monte Carasso.
