Playscapes

The “Playscape” series began while thinking about how we find diversions during these times of political and social unrest. How do we find places of amusement or activity to distract us and keep a sense of balance? The concept of playground for adults is varied from sporting events or vacations to the local tavern to going to the theater to dining out with friends or a loved one. This line of thinking challenged me to think of my youth and childhood. This resulted in this current project of seeking out actual playgrounds and playscapes.

The playscapes that I discovered were diverse with many different themes from ordinary places for physical activity to the surreal. The the playgrounds were bright with a very similar pallet of primary colors. I made the decision to focus on the playscape theme, equipment, and structures; thus the black & white images. I also wanted to find playscapes that were located surrounded by nature as opposed to an urban setting. This allowed the pictures to be anywhere, not a specific identifiable location.

The “Playscape” series continues my long form project of documenting and recording man-made structures. The built projects create pictures that witness human existence in changing their environment.
