Paris Photo 2016 : Sophie Zénon at the Galerie Thessa Herold

Preview

For the 2016 edition of Paris Photo, this year’s winner of the Fondation des Treilles Photography Residence Prize, Sophie Zénon, is showing some unpublished photographs from the first part of her work looking at her family history, which is closely linked to that of Italian immigration to France between the two World Wars. This project, mixing photography and video, has its source in a buried memory, that of her Italian origins, both maternal and paternal, and draws on exile, identity, the loss of the place where one was born, where one lived. She writes, “To be from elsewhere. To live here. Between the land of my origins, Italy, and the Normandie of my birth, how to feel from here rather than elsewhere?Does it come down to  the handing-on of history, of the attachment to a place, or objects ? What sense is there today in thinking of oneself from somewhere in a global context of multiple migrations? What story, what realm of  imagination, can be passed on when you are missing everything?”
