Preview

Introduction
Julie Saul has owned and directed the gallery for over twenty years. From the outset, it was the intention to specialize in representing contemporary photographic based art, from traditional to avant-garde. The gallery has also focused on special projects involving vintage photographs, and thematic and historical topics. The scope of exhibitions now embraces many mediums including works on paper, illustration, video and installations.

Julie Saul Gallery currently resides in its fifth space on West 22nd Street in Chelsea, after fifteen years in Soho. Among the group of artists represented, several have been with the gallery since the beginning, and the gallery regularly premiers emerging contemporary artists, as well as artists from all generations. Gallery artists are represented in the collections of most major American and many European art museums.

In addition to solo exhibitions Julie Saul Gallery also organizes thematic and historical shows, several of which have subsequently traveled to museums. Some of these include John Cocteau: The Mirror and the Mask, Constructing Images: Synapse Between Photography and Sculpture, Shooting the Moon: A Survey of Moon Photographs from the Invention of Photography to the Present, Skin/Deep: A Survey of Interior Imaging from X-Ray to MRI and more recentlyWhen color was new: vintage photographs from around the 1970s.

What is your point of view on the financial side of the photographic market today ?
Contemporary Photography is not as prevalent in the larger contemporary art work as it was a few years ago.  I saw very little photography at Frieze.
Photographs are doing well at auction and that market is increasingly competitive with the galleries.
The corporate sector of the contemporary art and photography market is down.
Art fairs are an increasingly big part of the financial picture.
