Montmartre’s Galerie 247 opened just a year ago. For its anniversary exhibition, the gallery is showing ‘Sulina or the European Far East’ by photographer Julien Pebrel, a member of Parisian agency, MYOP.
At km 0 of the Danube, Sulina’s old lighthouse is now merely a symbol. Since Romania joined the European Union in 2007, it has stood as the easterly gateway into the Union but no longer lights the way for cargo ships. At the start of last century, the Black Sea receded, leaving an area of bare land around the edifice. Meanwhile the European Danube Commission moved out, taking with it a multitude of traders: Turkish, Greek, German, French, Russian Lipovans and Ukranian Cossacks.
Ten consulates lowered their flags. French lost its status as the official language and Romania reclaimed its rights over the deserted landscape. Since then, the town has ceased to believe in its redemption.
