Orsolya Elek & Gergely Timár : Starting Line

Preview

A team member of L’Oeil since last April, I now have the honor of participating in the exhibition Starting Line, organized by the National Library of Hungary for the European Month of Photography in Budapest. The exhibition is the initiative of Katalin Csillag, head of the library’s photography department. It coincides with the 10th anniversary of the photo department at the University of Kaposvár, where I earned my bachelor’s degree. The exhibition will look back at the careers of Gergely Tímár and myself, two graduates of the department. This is the first in a series of exhibitions to focus on the work of young Hungarian photographers working abroad or domestically in this little-known Eastern European country.

I was born in 1986 in Budapest in the final days of the Soviet Union—although nobody knew it at the time. Our four-member family had just moved into a new building in a former industrial area. The apartment had all the modern conveniences to start a new life. We lived in four rooms on the fourth floor of a public housing project among families like our own. My parents and us kids formed friendships with our neighbors.
