Morrison Hotel Gallery : Marilyn Forever

Preview

Morrison Hotel Gallery presents a selection of photographs of Marilyn Monroe. Antonia Stoyanovich writes:

As the world approaches the 100th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s birth on June 1, her image remains one of the most powerful examples of photography’s ability to construct myth and persona. In front of the camera, Marilyn was never simply being herself. She was actively participating in the creation of “Marilyn,” a carefully shaped image that blended vulnerability, glamour, sensuality, wit, and mystery. Photographers such as Milton H. Greene and Douglas Kirkland understood that what made Marilyn extraordinary was not only her beauty, but her awareness of the camera itself. She instinctively knew how an image could transform into mythology.

What makes these photographs endure is the tension between performance and authenticity. Marilyn presented a version of herself she wanted the world to see, while each photographer brought their own perspective, desires, and artistic interpretation to the encounter. Somewhere between self-invention and the photographer’s gaze, something unexpected emerged. A fleeting, almost cinematic truth created in the instant the shutter clicked. The camera became more than a recording device, it acted as a kind of collaborator, capturing nuances neither subject nor photographer could fully control.

This edit Marilyn Forever offers a glimpse into the world of Marilyn. In Greene’s portraits, Marilyn often appears relaxed and introspective, revealing an intimacy rarely visible in her Hollywood publicity images. In Kirkland’s famous 1961 photographs, she shifts effortlessly between seduction and fragility, wrapped in white silk sheets and glowing in soft light. These images endure not because they document who Marilyn Monroe “really was,” but because they preserve the fascinating space between reality, performance, and fantasy. They remind us that photography is not simply about sharing “truth”, it is a chance for the creation of belief.
