Mark and Kristen Sink: –Photos à quatre mains

Preview

Based in Denver, Colorado, Mark and Kristen Sink have collaborated as photographic partners since 2008. Their process concentrates on making wet plate collodion images. The collection of plates on display at New York’s Robin Rice Galley offers a look into their seductive world of feminine poise, floral still lives, and transcendent portraits. This is their second exhibition together at the Gallery.

Collectors of beauty, finders of faces, and keepers of flowers, Mark and Kristen strive to make pictures that are direct, piercing, free, and honest. “We love being with each other and making work together. It is a dream and wish come true to be in such a wonderful collaborative relationship.”

Aesthetically, Mark and Kristen enjoy un-made up faces and vintage lace outfits, and consider themselves as carrying on a long tradition of photographic portraiture. They find themselves deeply connected to Julia Margaret Cameron’s work. “We love pulling Cameron’s books off the shelf to show our models as inspiration. She has been a huge influence on our work. Her portraits are so simple and romantic.” Like Cameron’s sitters, Mark and Kristen’s subjects are bound to their poses by the wet-plate process for several seconds, thus creating an underlining intensity that can be felt in the images.

Mark Sink, photographer, curator and teacher, has been making a living as a fine art photographer since 1978. As well as producing collodion wet plate photographs, he is well known for his imagery made with the Diana plastic camera. His personal work is in numerous museum collections and has been shown in numerous solo and group gallery exhibitions in the US, South America, and Europe.

Kristen Sink received her BFA from the Art Institute of Boston in 2008. She has exhibited her photography in NYC, Boston, DC, and Denver. Kristen spends most of her time immersed in photography working on new images, commercial projects, and looking at as many historical and contemporary artists as she can seek out.
