Laila Hida / Artsi :

Preview

Sunday, September 21st, 2014, marked the first edition of an artistic event in Tangier organized by the association SSILATE.

On the theme of “ÊTRE ICI” (Being Here) the association invited 30 different Moroccan artists working in different disciplines to take over six exceptional places for a day, all open to the public.

An artistic duo, the photographer Laila Hida and the stylist Artsi, were invited to present a series of photographs at the Palais Akaaboune. For the past several years, the two Marrakech-based artists have worked together to create a world and iconography based of the stylist’s creations. Viewers might have seen their photographs of Hindi Zahra as Frida Kahlo, or selections from their new Ethiopian collection shot in Addis-Ababa. For the photographs, everything is planned and photographed with the designer Artsi.

For their latest creation, the artists conceived of the photographs all different allegories to question current events. In each of these 11 portraits, each character is looking for something: spirituality, a material life, a memory, a new philosophy, a response…

To strengthen this iconic aspect, Hida decided to use the conventional methods used in studio fashion photography. Against a white background, the model poses with simple and minimalist accessories—a veil, a suitcase, a TV, a branch—in sober black and white colors. The photographer asserts herself with this apparent simplicity. This deeply sensitive photographic process reveals these accessories to be symbols of our respective quests, intimate yet universal.
