The Viewer Writes the Story
Perhaps because I am an introvert, perhaps because I am a novelist, the black and white street photography that appeals to me consists of pictures where the viewer can create her own story from the elements within the frame.
What are those people talking about? What is he thinking? Why is she smiling? What magical conditions aligned to lead to these people together, right now, in this location?
Although I enjoy landscape photography too, and often shoot in color, to me there is something about monochrome photography of people in public places that appeals to my instinct to invent a narrative. I write stories in my head; I believe my strongest images enable the viewer to write their own stories, from the two-dimensional momentary event captured by my camera.
