Jackson Fine Art : Andrea Torres Balaguer

Preview

Jackson Fine Art presents a selection of new works by Spanish photographer Andrea Torres Balaguer. Six previously unreleased photographs, including some resulting from her recent collaboration with Dior.

Not unlike the exhibitions of Gail Albert Halaban and Mary Ellen Bartley that opened concurrently, Balaguer’s large scale portraits in the intimate Viewing Room of the gallery are striking jewels that derive power from elements that remain unseen (one of the ongoing series in the exhibition is entitled The Unknown) and open to interpretation. These self-portraits are made in natural light, their focus trained on the position of her body and the provocative silks, laces, and velvets she is draped in. The narrative is pushed one step further with the painted unique brushstroke that is applied across the subject’s face post-production, adding another layer that purposefully veils the face, adding an air of enigma and intrigue to the subject’s identity.

On a side note, Balaguer made a debut at Phillips London auction house this past November setting a record for this series.
