In 2011 the Noorderlicht Photography Foundation is organizing its widely praised International Photo Festival for the eighteenth time. The festival takes place until october 9th in Groningen.
Our lives are full of images, but what connects them? Every year Noorderlicht organises its International Photofestival, in which diverse photographic genres and series are welded into a thematic narrative, like chapters in a book. It may be about religion, conflict or globalisation, about wonder or a sense of space. About our world or worlds that might seem far removed from ours. Always working from the proposition that all our lives are ultimately interwoven with each other.
Noorderlicht is more than its festival. Since 1980, Noorderlicht, has been a many sided and innovative international stage for photography, particularly in documentary genres. In its own individual manner, in this socially engaged content Noorderlicht has sought to reveal the visual beauty of photography. To this end it organizes not only the annual photo festival, but also numerous exhibitions in its own photo gallery. In addition, Noorderlicht arranges photography commissions and promotes a deeper appreciation of photography by organizing discussions, lectures and master classes. Noorderlicht operates with a world-wide perspective, but at the same time is strongly rooted in the North Netherlands.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, more than half of the world’s population are living in cities. Metropolis: City Life in the Urban Age shows the many faces of the modern city.
Never in history has the number of people living in cities grown faster than in recent decades. This has enhanced the role of the city as a cultural, economic and social nerve centre. The city is the birthplace for a culture and morality that extends far beyond its boundaries.
In photography of diverse sorts – documentary and constructed – Metropolis literally leads you through a city of images. Metropolis exposes the soul of the city, the place where our future is being shaped.
