Giovanni Gastel, Forty years of stories in pictures

Preview

A retrospective of the iconic photographer of Italian fashion Giovanni Gastel opened right during the fashion week in Milan. The All Milan gathered to see the 400 prints on display in a magnificent Renaissance palace in the heart of the city, a few meters from the Duomo. In the words of Germano Celant, Curator of the exhibition, the work of Gastel is totally Milanese. This nephew of Luchino Visconti has discovered the art of light and staging as a teenager and has absorbed the artistic atmosphere of Lombardy. This is what builds the originality and unity of his work: mastered irony, subtle whimsy, and elegance foremost. A game of alternations between the aristocratic otherness of his mother’s family and the industrial vision of bourgeois Milanese embodied by his father. Images where the transgression is never  first degree. Constructions mastered like poems. And a pleasure for the eyes.
