Bongiorno Siora Maschera
I was born in Venice in 1950 but though I leave in another region, I’m still very attached to my city of birth and to its customs and traditions.
These photos are part of a wider project on Venice Carnival and especially on the masks.
This Carnival began oficially on 1296 when the Serenissima of Venice allowed any people, of any social level, to have fun completely anonymously.
All social classes were temporarily considered at the same level, and everybody was allowed to make fun of athorities and aristocrats, realeasing tensions and bad moods without risking punishment.
During Carnival period, Venitians greeted each other with a simple “Good morning Lady Mask”
In 2025, Carnival of Venice was from February 14th till March 4th.
