Fashion Press Review –by Patricia Nagy

The beginning of a new year is generally known to be the time for change and for sticking to our resolutions (Quiting smoking? Dusting off that gym bag? Trying to avoid the Louboutin boutique?). It’s tough, my lovely red soles and my credit card can attest to that. But hopefully in these visuals you’ll each find a tiny bit of inspiration to keep you on whatever track you’re hoping to be on for 2013.

In this spirit, the grand Karlie Kloss illustrates her commitment to change in this photo by Patrick Demarchelier for Vogue US’s January issue, while for Harper’s Bazaar Spain’s February issue, photographer Txema Yeste shows his commitment to appreciating tight leather skirts. Who could blame him?

And it’s true, it can be hard to give up smoking, especially the way that Hugh Lippe romantically portrays it for Exit magazine’s Fall Winter issue. Or for that matter, hand guns, especially when model/actress Milla Jovovich makes it looks so easy to be mean in heels for Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, in Vogue Paris’ February issue.

But if you find yourself on the other end of Milla’s fingers, one piece of advice for keeping it together is a disguise, as demonstrated by model Kate Upton for Matt Jones in French ELLE’s January 4th issue. Or better yet, to communicate, as seen in Marie Claire Holland’s January issue, by photographer Philip Riches of a loud mouthed Dewi Dregen.

Keeping your eyes filtered from the sun is another great resolution, which can be made even more glamorous by the right sunglasses, as seen in this shot by Ellen von Unwerth for Italian Vogue’s January issue, or in this image by Koray Birand of Anne V. soaking up the sun in Turkish Harper’s Bazaar’s January issue.

Max Farago’s got his girl made in the shade, in this image from Dazed and Confused February issue, while photographer Jorge Camarotti gets his girl on the ground in Dress to Kill’s winter issue.

Not that we have this problem in Paris mind you, but I do insist on the importance of sun protection, as photographer Ryan McGinley echoes in his images of Daria Werbowy for W magazine’s January edition. And if you find yourself in NYC (with those cold but sunny winters) enjoy the rays by soaking up every last bit anywhere you can, as we see in this shot by Txema Yeste for Vogue Paris’ February issue.

And while we’re in NYC, why not bring more color to your life? Red is the new black, especially when worn by model Anja Rubik, photographed by Mario Sorrenti, and published in Paris Vogue’s February issue. For a quick check, be sure to look down, mirrors are everywhere, as confirmed in this image by Camilla Akrans from Numero 140.

Taking time for oneself is not easy, but photographer Zoe Grossman gets Alice Englert to do just that for Flaunt’s January/February edition, or in Nylon Mexico’s January issue, shot by Toshinao Kumakura (note the wide-brimmed hat). Even more difficult when you’re on a crowded beach, but Boris Ovini seems to help model Bernadett Vidacs find a moment, in this image for Soup magazine’s latest issue.

But a moment with a friend is always lovely, especially with the view that Chat Pitman provides in this image for Interview Russia’s February issue. And speaking of skylines and tall buildings, Glen Luchford gets model Kati Nescher to take it in and enjoy it, in these shots for Paris Vogue’s February edition.

Focusing on a goal is exactly what Steven Meisel did – with his lense though, on model Fei Fei Sun for Italian Vogue’s January issue in this crisp retro moment, as did Naomi Campbell in her calculated pose for Thomas Whiteside in ELLE US February.

A good word to live by – focus – no matter what your goal or resolution may be for the new year. Just remember these shots by Liz Collins for Love magazine’s Spring/Summer 2013 issue : keep your lenses clean and your kittens happy.
