After Debout! (2018), Au-delà de la couleur (2021), and Forever Sixties (2023) at the Couvent des Jacobins, Pinault Collection, the City of Rennes, and Rennes Métropole are renewing their collaboration with a thematic exhibition entitled Les yeux dans les yeux (Eyes to Eyes).
The facts speak for themselves: more than half of the works in the Pinault Collection, across all mediums, deal with the human figure. Through this subject, the artists place us face to face with our fellow human beings, real or imagined, and thus allow them to escape the passing of time. Nearly 90 works from the Pinault Collection have been chosen for this exhibition, which invites the viewer to confront multiple faces. Through these gazes and attitudes, tensions, trajectories, emotions, revolts, feelings, love, and sometimes violence can be read: each of these portraits delivers a message and is a landscape to be explored, eyes to eyes. The exhibition spans the history of art, speaking to us about the relationship to the image of oneself and others in the age of social media, and evoking the idea of disappearance and the sometimes impossibility of capturing a face, an expression, a spirit, an attitude, a soul. Masked gazes mingle with frank glances, and intimacy ends up rubbing shoulders with eternity. Artists such as Xinyi Cheng, Nan Goldin, Damien Hirst, Annie Leibovitz, Yan Pei Ming, Shirin Neshat, Irving Penn, Cindy Sherman, Luc Tuymans, and many others question the representation of oneself and others, inviting us to reflect on the individual and contemporary society.
Nearly half of the works are being exhibited for the first time by the Pinault Collection on this occasion.
